Why Smokers Celebrate 420 — And How to Do It Right

INTRODUCTION

Every April 20th, something happens across Southern California — and honestly, across the whole country. Smokers gather, shops get busy, and the culture comes alive in a way that only happens once a year. If you’ve ever wondered why 4/20 is such a big deal, you’re not alone. The story behind it is more interesting than most people think.

At Mister Smokes in Buena Park, we’ve been part of this tradition for nearly two decades. Here’s the real history behind 420 — and why it matters to the smoke community.

THE REAL STORY BEHIND 420

The most well-known origin of 420 traces back to a group of high school students in San Rafael, California in 1971. They called themselves the Waldos, and they had a plan to meet up after school at 4:20pm to search for an abandoned cannabis crop they’d heard about. They never found the crop, but the phrase “420” stuck as their code word.

The term spread through California counterculture, eventually connecting with the Grateful Dead scene and spreading nationally throughout the 1980s and 90s. By the time the internet took off, 420 had gone global.

April 20th — 4/20 on the calendar — became the unofficial holiday. And it has been ever since.

What started as a code between a few friends in Northern California became one of the most recognized dates in smoke culture worldwide. That’s a pretty remarkable run for a five-digit number.

WHY THE SMOKE COMMUNITY CELEBRATES

420 is more than just a date. For a lot of people, it represents community, freedom of expression, and a shared identity that crosses backgrounds, generations, and zip codes.

In Orange County and across Southern California, the 420 tradition brings together people from all walks of life — low riders, hip hop heads, skaters, surfers, artists, and everyday folks who just appreciate the ritual of a good smoke. It’s one of those rare moments where the culture shows up for itself.

For the smoke shop community, April 20th is a day to celebrate the customers, the craft, and the products that make the experience what it is. It’s a day to recognize that this isn’t just retail — it’s culture.

HOW TO CELEBRATE 420 THE RIGHT WAY

If you’re planning to mark the occasion, here are a few things worth thinking about:

  1. Upgrade your setup — 420 is a great excuse to finally grab that piece you’ve been eyeing. Whether it’s a ROOR bong, a Zob glass pipe, a Puffco device, or a solid HVY Glass waterpipe, a new piece makes the day feel like an occasion.

  2. Stock up on essentials — Make sure you’re not running low on grinders, rolling papers, or lighters heading into the weekend. Nothing kills the vibe like being unprepared.

  3. Clean your gear — If your glass has been sitting dirty, 420 is the perfect motivation to give it a proper clean. A fresh piece hits different.

  4. Celebrate with your crew — The best 420s are shared ones. Whether it’s a small gathering or a full-on session with the whole squad, the community aspect is what makes the day special.

  5. Support your local smoke shop — Shopping local keeps the culture alive. When you buy from a shop like Mister Smokes instead of a big-box retailer, you’re supporting a business that’s been part of your community for years.
